During my interview with Professor William P. Gordon I realized two things. The first was that he is a very friendly man. The second was that his beard was better than mine by several orders of magnitude. It imbued serious authority.
Read moreThe facts on sexual assault
Myth: sexual assault is an inconceivable act that only happens to young women that ask for it by leading guys on by flirting and dressing seductively, then reporting it to the police in order to get back at their boyfriends or to save their reputation.
Read moreThe Myth of Post-Feminism
Feminism: how often do we hear that word laced with negative connotations? Merriam-Webster defines feminism as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes” and as “organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests”. What then creates such strong reactions to the word? It can be used to dismiss legitimate points made by women, whether related to gender or not.

Tuition, books, and living expenses add up fast, making the task of finding and securing employment during the academic year seem like an impossible challenge, especially when you have no idea where to start looking.

There are posters aplenty at BU which preach the possibilities inherent in a Bachelor of Arts. Professors urge you on to a Master’s Degree and your parents wonder what you can do with Philosophy. Journalism is frequently mentioned, or perhaps you can be an Art Advisor (whatever that is).

Succeeding in university is not a cakewalk, even for those that flew through high school with ease. It takes hard work and dedication to flourish at a high level. Living away from home for the first time can be a huge change, and professors aren’t going to be breathing down your throats to study or hand in assignments.

The university experience is a time of learning, not simply a structure for academia. Not only are questions proposed in the formal educational setting, but also the personal lives of all participants. Luckily, there are many people that can help on the mission from unknowing to knowing and all stages in between.
Read moreWhat’s a “Building Fee”?
Like most students, September is a hard month for me. Getting back into a routine is not the only difficult part of September; September is also an incredibly expensive month. Tuition is due and the cost of textbooks adds up quickly. Of the over $4,000 I currently owe in tuition and fees, over $500 of that is in fees that students have voted to pay. Half this cost is the $250 health and dental plan (which you can opt out of if you have alternate coverage through a parent or spouse), and the rest is made up of BUSU and building fund fees, the U-Pass, the Quill Levy, CFS Fee, and WUSC fee.

For those of you who do not already know me, my name is Emily Diehl, and I am the Editor-in-Chief of The Quill. This is my second year in the position; previously, I held the position of Assistant Editor-in-Chief during the 2011-2012 school year.

SPOILER ALERT! The first installment in Blank Verse, a new Canadian webseries, hit YouTube on Sunday, August 25th. A homage to William Shakespeare in many ways, the first episode – “Act I, Scene I” – held enough substance to warrant a viewing of Scene II, in my opinion.

Even as the summer heat may seem to have no end, the amount of summer break remaining is slimming. With little under a week of “free time” left before classes for the 2013/2014 school year begin, questions begin to form.

With each August day that slips through your fingers, September and the start of the 2013/2014 regular term nears. In addition to perhaps requiring a new fall wardrobe (budget pending, as always), every student needs textbooks for their new courses.

The transition from teenager to adulthood isn’t easy. Even heart-warming and relatable coming-of-age teen flicks fail to adequately articulate the challenges young adults face. Aside from the obvious physical metamorphosis occurring (complete with the pesky array of hormones), major life decisions must be made during these years, like one’s romantic future and one’s career path.

Byron doesn’t stop smiling. From the minute he rushes into the exam room of the Brandon Hills Veterinary Clinic and scrambles up onto the table, to when he makes a mad dash for the door ten minutes later, there is a permanent grin on his face, his tail happily wagging behind him. It’s a good day – he’s just given blood.

Remember Mothers’ Day when you were a kid? Crafts were made some amalgamation of crayons, paper, somewhat sloppy writing, glue, and sparkles, and presented to our moms (and other important women in our lives) with the utmost pride and giddiness on that day in May, the day on which we specifically pay homage to the strongest and most amazing women in our lives.
