E-Gré winner David Potvin prepares
for pro series performance
BU NEWS — November 25, 2022
BRANDON – The winner of the 45th Eckhardt-Gramatté (E-Gré) National Music Competition, held earlier this year, will perform a pro series concert at Brandon University (BU) on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
Montréal-based pianist David Potvin will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall in the Queen Elizabeth II Music Building. Potvin released a new album, Breathe In, Breath Out, this summer, and the concert in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall is the final performance of his acclaimed national E-Gré winner’s tour.
“The annual Eckhardt-Grammaté National Music Competition and Brandon University’s School of Music have been discovering and launching Canada’s top emerging artists for 45 years. We are excited to welcome pianist David Potvin, the winner of the 2022 Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, back to BU,” said Megumi Masaki, Artistic Director of the E-Gré competition. “David has been thrilling audiences across Canada with his beautifully curated program of Canadian music, including the 2022 commissioned work “Growing Forgiveness” by Indigenous composer Cris Derksen. The 10-concert national tour, that stretches from Nova Scotia to B.C., gives the winner invaluable first professional touring and community engagement experiences, and a chance to network with a wide range of presenters and audiences to further their career. Please join us in celebrating David’s brilliant touring and artistic success at BU’s School of Music pro series.”
Potvin has received various performance awards in addition to his E-Gré success, including prizes at the 2018 Shean and 2017 Stepping Stone competitions. In 2020, he received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Toronto, where he studied with acclaimed pedagogue Marietta Orlov and won the DMA recital competition.
“David amazed E-Gré competition followers with his amazing performance at this year’s event,” said Greg Gatien, Dean of Music at BU. “He has firmly established himself as one of the top young pianists in Canada, and we’re excited to welcome David back to Brandon for what’s sure to be a breathtaking evening of music.”
Other recent performances in Potvin’s varied repertoire include a recital in collaboration with the Canadian Music Centre celebrating the works of Quebec composer Jacques Hétu, and a 2021 recital with violinist Martin Beaver featuring the world premiere of Stewart Grant’s Violin Sonata. He has also been collaborating with composer Edward Enman on a recording of the composer’s four-hand piano pieces.
A passionate music educator, Potvin teaches piano in both of Canada’s official languages and is a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music’s college of examiners.
Tickets for Potvin’s performance are available at the door, or from the School of Music Office.
The School of Music gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Manitoba Arts Council.
