Tonight, in the Elephant Room on the 3rd Floor of the Knowles-Douglas Building, Brandon University Students for Life in conjunction with Brandon Youth For Life will be screening It’s a Girl, a documentary focused on sex-selective abortion and the subsequent effects in countries like India and China.

Documenting the “gendercide” of girls who survive infancy only to face neglect or “grow up to face extreme violence and even death at the hands of their own husbands or other family members”, the film discusses the centuries-old traditions, ingrained cultural dynamics, and government policies that have amalgamated to create and sustain an environment bent on the elimination of the female gender from society. Filmed in India and China, It’s a Girl tells the stories of abandoned and trafficked girls and of brave mothers fighting to save their daughters’ lives, and those who are desperate for a son, and then asks why this is happening and why so little is being done to protect girls and women.

The movie will begin at 7:30 pm, and students curious about the film can visit the official website to catch the trailer, read the blog and other associated stories.
